Career Support Parents

The Commonweal School believes that good careers education goes hand in hand with you achieving academic success and achieving your potential.  The landscape of education, training and employment opportunities that students need to navigate is considered more complex and challenging than previous years which is why Commonweal School is committed to providing an outstanding careers programme that helps every student to make the right choices for their progression.  We strive to make the most of all our students’ motivations, skills and talents and endeavour to help parents / carers support their child in the decision-making stages.

We understand that careers conversations can often happen outside of school hours and have provided a list of useful websites that can help you guide your child when those conversations arise

As for careers within school hours, Commonweal supports students from year 7 – 13, helping students identify and build experiences, skills and behaviours essential for a successful working future.  We provide students access to differentiated, impartial and independent information and guidance in various forms about the range of training options available post 14 and16 as well as insight into up to date labour market information and pathways to specific careers. Parents are always welcome to join one to one careers sessions with their child when they arise.

By helping students with decisions at crucial stages, informing them of all their training options and introducing them to the world of work, we aim to prepare them for the world of work whatever pathway they choose.

At Commonweal, we have a whole school approach to careers with all staff supporting the delivery of careers education through the pastoral system and within curriculum areas. In addition, we have a designated ‘Futures team’ who co-ordinate and monitor the delivery of the Careers programme

Commonweal is committed to meeting and exceeding the Statutory careers guidance – published Jan 2018 (updated October 2018).  We will continue to use the Gatsby Benchmarks and Compass tool to monitor our effectiveness in achieving outstanding careers provision.

As well as the Benchmarks, Commonweal continues to strive to improve our provision and is delighted to be one of the schools selected to be involved in the ‘Swindon and Wiltshire Careers Hub’.  This allows us to share and receive good practice from regional and national sources, engage in additional careers training, have access to additional careers resources and build stronger links with local and national employers and training providers
