What does this mean? ...

Extended services’ is a ‘flagship’ government agenda. Many schools are already providing a good range of extended school services and my role is to work alongside these schools to help develop these further, building on the existing provision. Each school may develop the ‘core offer’ differently to each other and any areas for development will be on a gradual process.

What is an extended school? An extended school is a school that works in partnership with other agencies that have an interest in outcomes for children and young people, and with the local community. In doing so, it aims to help meet not only the school’s objectives but also to share in helping to meet the wider needs of children, young people, families and their communities.

Extended schools provide a range of services and activities, often beyond the school day and frequently in partnerships with other providers, to help meet the needs of children, their families and the wider community. By 2010, all schools are to offer the core set of extended services.

Extended School Core services:

A varied menu of activities (including study support and play) and childcare

  • Primary Schools – access to a varied menu of activities, combined with childcare, from 8am to 6pm, five days a week, 48 weeks a year.
  • Secondary Schools – access to a varied menu of activities which also offer young people a safe place to be from 8am to 6pm during term-time and more flexibly in the holidays.

Parenting Support

    • Access to parenting programmes, both structured and in-formal opportunities for parents to engage with the school and each other
    • Access to family learning sessions to allow children to learn with their fathers and mothers
    • Access information sessions for fathers and mothers at the beginning of primary and secondary phases
    • Information about nationally and locally available sources of information, advice
      and support

Swift and Easy access to targeted and
specialist services

    • Access to (either on school site, or signposted somewhere close-by) multi-agency support such as, special educational needs (SEN) and disability support services; health services; behavioural support; and others such as counsellors; youth workers; family support and social care workers, to ensure child’s/young person’s needs are met.

Community Access

    • Adult learning opportunities based at the school, or signposted somewhere near-by
    • Where schools have facilities suitable for use by the wider community, it can look to open these up to meet wider community needs – in response to local demand

Not every school will need to provide all these services and activities on site – access can be through the cluster of local schools or through other providers. The services and activities on offer will be determined by local needs and demand through consultation.

Every Child Matters

Extended schools are at the heart of Every Child Matters, raising standards and ensuring that children:

  • Are healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

Many schools have been providing a range of extended services for a long time. The current approach to extended services has been developed by building on their experience.
